Community Appeal for an Accessible Vehicle

Three years ago, Michael Cook’s life changed in an instant after a cycling accident left him a quadriplegic.

Today, his story is one of determination, dignity, and the power of community.

Michael, a former Rotarian, a proud member of the Berri Bike Boys, and a long-time local contributor to other community groups, now lives at Calvary St Catherine Aged Care in Berri.

What he missed most wasn’t just independence — it was the simple freedom to get out, to travel, and to stay connected with the community and places that matter to him.

That freedom came with a price tag of $102,000 — the cost of a specially fitted Toyota vehicle capable of safely transporting Michael and his wheelchair.

And that’s where this community stepped up.

Through the combined efforts of the Rotary Club of Berri and the Berri Bike Boys, an incredible $102,000 was raised just before Christmas — thanks to more than 200 individual donors who believed Michael deserved his freedom back.

After three long years, Michael can now travel again.

Recently, a special ceremony was held in Berri to acknowledge and celebrate the extraordinary community support that made this possible — a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people rally around one of their own.
